it will take too long to explain why I ended making this.....so I won't bother.
the real trick here was to see if I could blend a model with a still photo as it's environment, and light it with the environment as well. Hope I succeeded.

the modelling and surfaceing look pretty cool but i think the lighting needs more work to match up with the photo. I would cast more light on the object because at the moment it looks like light is being blocked from it.
Also, i think blurring the photo more would give it more realism by faking depth of field.
